Reiki is a peaceful, noninvasive call on the body to heal itself. Inherent within all of us is a wisdom that knows wellness and balance; Reiki returns us to that wisdom.
The practice of Reiki originated in Japan in 1922 when Mikao Usui ascended sacred Mount Kurama, north of Kyoto, in search of spiritual transformation. While fasting and meditating, he received the healing energy of Reiki, and realizing its value, began sharing it with others. Soon thereafter, Usui opened a clinic, and through practicing Reiki, developed additional healing techniques, which he began to teach to others.
‘Rei’ is defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. Its subtle wisdom permeates everything and is available to help and provide guidance. “Ki” is nonphysical energy that animates all living beings and is known around the world by various names including prana, chi, and life force. “Reiki,” then, literally means ‘universal life energy’. The Reiki practitioner is attuned by a Reiki Master to healing vibrations, and when his or her hands are placed on or near someone’s body, the body responds by re-finding it’s balance, usually first by a calming of the stress response in the nervous system. The individual’s system determines what changes are made during the session. In that way, the practitioner is not in charge; he or she is not determining anything about the session or its outcomes. For the client, it’s a spiritual practice influenced only by their own spiritual resources, not those of the practitioner.
Each person’s response to Reiki is unique and varies session to session, but most people experience a profound sense of calm, safety, and rejuvenation. Some people feel heat emanating from the practitioner’s hands, a flow of energy, tingliness or a simple peace. The physiologic system finds balance and a path forward towards sustained wellness.
A student of Bonnie Hassan in the Usui Tibetan tradition, I have been a Reiki Master since July 2019 and a practitioner since 2008. I would love to share Reiki with you and am happy to answer any questions you may have.
